Slaughter Class Batteries - Printing Error?
« on: August 05, 2018, 08:24:05 PM »
It's been a long time since the Battlefleet Gothic Main Rulebook was published; almost 20 years!  In this time, several magazines were published, a few books including the Armada expansion, the 2007 official update and the 2010 update that would have been official had it been published before GW discontinued Specialist Games.

...and in all this time, there's been one extremely obvious error that not even I, an anerrotypical obsessive neckbeard caught until today.

Behold!  The entry for the Slaughter class Cruiser.

Red circle is mine.  This is on my high-quality pdf that someone kindly made, but I double checked and it's in my hardcopy as well.  It's not mentioned in ANY update I've seen.

I'm assuming that because the fire arc is Left that it's supposed to be a Port weapon, NOT a Prow weapon.  Regardless, I think i'll play with it as a Port weapon, as does everyone else I've played.

However, I know that there are members of this forum that are a greater authority on this old chestnut than I am.  I was hoping for the opinions of the revered gentry of the Specialist Arms Forums and the ruling of the more venerable members responsible for various official documents.

Good find!  ;D

Edit: I can confirm this for my englisch version of the rulebook, but in the german version the entry is corrected -  steuerbord/backbord (starboard/port) weapon batteries.

Edit2: The entry is also corrected in the french version (b‚bord/tribord).

In that case, two official GW documents are contradictory, so I can go with the one that seems to match the fire arc.  Thanks!  I would never have thought to check non-English language versions.

Well, what do you know! Itís been so long since Iíve looked at the old PDFs that I canít remember if I noticed before! I certainly didnít pay much attention, though :P Iím not sure if it was in any FAQ or Errata, though.

The only gameplay difference would be the critical hits, I suppose, and since starboard and port hits arenít equally likely already, I personally already modify that part of the critical hit tableóso it would seem natural to me to keep the Slaughter as a beautiful, symmetric beastie and assume a typo.

As I recall, the Slaughter model is a bit of an oddity already with its layout, considering the parts used to build one! There was once some discussion on the topic floating around.

lol, the memories.

But yeah, port makes most sense even without translations.

I always figured that "Port" meant "Prow", but the mistake that stuck out to me more is that the actual picture of the ship has two lance batteries on it when it should have 1 lance battery and 1 weapons battery based on the stats.

It actually does have one of each. The bits that are used are combined lance and weapons battery, so each bay has half of each.

Now that I look closer you are right. However, that same configuration is on the Devastation class cruiser as well, which does not have port/strbd weapons batteries, while the Acheron Heavy cruiser has only lances for its port/stbd weapons armament, and the picture appears to show no port/stbd bits just turrets straight into the hull where the bits would go. Interesting.
