[WM Wood Elfs]
« on: August 14, 2013, 01:18:16 PM »
Commander-in-chief: TBD

This thread is open to discuss problems with/development of the 2009 compendium Wood Elf selector
http://wm-selector.appspot.com/army_selector.html?list=woodelf

Open points of discussion:

Laid to rest:
While Rick P. and Studio where still involved with the development of the game, this subject was a no-go zone. The scale envisioned by "most" players for their Warmaster games was considered to "epic" to be able to have the Wood Elfs produce their own army. At the best they where seen as a contingent represented by some units and characters allied to Bretonian or High Elf armies, and subject to function as proxy.

With the publication in the 2009 Compendium (which essentially was 100% fan-based) the idea behind the list was still more or less restricted by the proposition that the Woodelves would normally be fighting a defensive battle on the borders of their own lands.

I think it would be nice to ID people with wood elf armies or suitable proxy forces who are keen on testing the list

I'd really appreciate batreps and community suggestions on focus areas or other suggestions

I have been thinking and I'm wondering if adding a treeman unit to the army either in addition to the character (could rename him a treeman ancient) in the same fashion as a G.daemon/giant

Also what are people's feelings on the elven archery, should we take our cue from the high elf tourney list and remove it from glade riders, or is the lack of artillery enough compensation?

I've been looking over the list and have been wondering if there should be a treeman unit - something very expensive like the dragon Ogres but with vulnerability to fire just like the dryads.

The list is limited by the very large (5 units and 345 point) unit minimum per 1000 points.  I too would love to see some battle reports with it.

Just looked at this one and I feel I like this one a bit more - for offering up Treekin and Treemen as separate units and having a lower minimum unit threshold.  Still seems rather too powerful.

There are things of this list (the one publish in fanatic) that do not like to much. I prefere the one publish in 2009 compendium. But my favorite is the one publish in the early warmaster magazine (don't remember if nš4 or 5)

It just seems a crying shame not to have a treeman unit when the Eureka figures are so good! x-D

I am just getting into Warmaster. I found the army list that Stormwind listed before I even had my hands on the 2009 Compendium/Trial Armies.

I will likely try both, but I purchased my army to fit to the alternative list. I'll hope to have some battles with them soon.

With the release this week of the Pendraken dark elf witch elves I feel it adds a unit which WE were missing and certainly adds to my interest in starting a WE army. Despite it being a while since last post I think that's reason enough to resurrect this thread.

The fanatic/Hildreth list translates everything from warhammer into warmaster and is carefully considered. I agree that Waywatchers must be in this army.

The alternative armies list is more 'warmaster oriented and has trimmed down the unit options in line with other armies. At the moment the alternative armies/ selector basic minimums roll in at 870 which seems a wee bit on the heavy side, by 150-200 points.

There's various points well made above regarding Treeman/ tree kin. I'm going to start a WE army as one of next year's projects and bugger about with a few rules as they're almost there bar the big boys. I like treekin so I want see if the Treeman as a command option for forest spirits would work. Either that or down grade stats for Treeman and have them as a unit option and ditch treekin. Out loud the latter sounds the better option.

I am working on a rough army list of my own for WE as I find that one too fiddly and awkward.  Just my personal opinion. :-X

My plan is to use Witch Elves as wardancers.  Waywatchers I kind of assumed should be a direct lift of the Skaven Gutter Runners as an ambush unit, if they are to be included?

The "original" Woodelves list had the Waywatchers as a reusable one shot artillery......

Position in ambush, shoot and fade. Take off table and then roll as per the units moving back on table.
Shooting as a dwarven FC (alternativly as a Skaven WLC).
No "stand and shoot", if they are brought on table and are charge they would "fade" as reaction.

If I was writing my own Wood Elf list I'd include zoats as a unit.  This would be to provide for some variety beyond elves and tree creatures, but may just be for my own nostalgic WFB 3rd edition wood elf ally reasons! :)

Whoa that is interesting - a nice idea.

The "original" Woodelves proposal was geared towards the smaller WE realm(s)/community fighting off invaders of their realm, or to represent WE making surgical strikes on enemy locations in terrain that suits their style of playing.

To create the required effect the WE player could mix and match a choice of UNITS/CHARACTERS and EXTRA WOODLAND PIECES. A WE army would allow the WE player to change any table into one more suited to represent WE stomping grounds.
