Scavvy Toxbomb Discussion
« on: July 05, 2009, 09:06:18 AM »
The scavvy toxbomb is a grenade, but it works a little differently from the other standard grenades. Wherever the grenade lands, you place a permanent marker there. Anyone within 2" of that marker, unless protected by a respirator, is hit with a str4 hit on a 4+. This happens to anyone in that area when it lands, anyone within 2" at the start of their turn, and anyone that walks into that radius for the rest of the game.

Now, I see this weapon not so much as a grenade, but more an area denial weapon. This would be excellent to throw in doorways or chokepoints, to prevent the enemy from easily passing through those areas. But the standard grenade rules apply for these. You must target an enemy to throw these, just like every other grenade (except smoke grenades).

I think the requirement to have a target with this grenade really confines the use of it. Now, I know the reasons why you can't just throw grenades at any point you desire. Reasons such as, tossing into the middle of groups to hit the most enemies, making the grenade more powerful, and people cheesily saying "I can't target your model in hiding, so I'll just target 1 inch in front of him."

So what I'd propose is a different way of throwing it. You can either A: Use as normal, target an enemy and throw, or B: Throw it at a designated spot with no enemy within 5". This allows you to use it as a normal grenade, and allow you to use it as an area denial weapon which it seems to be, while preventing players from cheat hitting hiding models or models outside of the grenades range.

Thoughts?

My understanding is that you don't have to throw grenades at enemy models.  You can target any point on the ground, with a -1 to hit penalty.

Err, no. The faqs say you need a legitimate target

From the newest faq, top of 35
Quote
Q: Can I use a grenade or other template weapon to target a spot on the ground or barricade next to a hidden model?
[2005]
A: You must always target a fighter unless the weapon or scenario allows otherwise. Just because you have a frag
grenade and you want to target a hidden model you have no line-of-sight (LOS). Without LOS you cannot elect to
throw the grenade at the barricade in front of the hidden model unless otherwise specified (see gas grenades in the
armoury section of the Necromunda ORB). This prevents you from targeting the bulkhead (+1 for a large target)
instead of the Juve behind heavy cover that just sprinted 12" (-3 total). The bottom line is that unless the weapon
description or scenario allows it you must always target a fighter or objective.

So my discussion still stands. You cannot legally throw a grenade like this at any point you desire, but the tox bomb is best used thrown at points on the ground in the anticipation of people wanting to go through that area.

But that opens up exactly the kind of problems described in the FAQ answer. Targeting a bulkhead, or throwing it near an enemy you can't see.

I was not aware of the FAQ, I was only going by the rulebook which says something about targetting a spot on the ground, which counts as a small target (-1 to hit).

That's why I said in the op: You can use it two ways. A: Use as normal, target an enemy and throw, or B: Throw it at a designated spot with no enemy within 5".

This way you either target an enemy, or an open area with no one around. Keeps the normal grenade use, but adds the area denial effect without being able to be used to cheat target enemies.
