Title: [BFG] The Survivors
Post by: FistusMaximus on May 08, 2013, 06:00:28 PM
Well, i thought its time to post some pictures of my fleets and projects to show to the community that i don't just talk and ask silly questions, but that i actually do get some serious work done  ;)
(i'm 19 and just been into BFG for about a year now, so my painting skills are at best average, don't expect too much, except for a pretty massive fleet  ;D )

The title actually has two sides:

one is the fluff one, my BFG fleet(s) are the surviving part of a crusade fleet after a little incident during a reentry after a warp travel involving the fleets emperor battleship and a space hulk... featuring an imploding warpdrive  ;D
(i am writing an entire book about the backstory, maybe if sometime i'll get to translating it, i might post some of it on this forum... or at least the important bit :D )

the other side is that these ships are the survivors of the "SG heresy", how i call the entire thing with GW trying to silently kill SG.
survivors as in "all the fleets are at playable size and i am just missing very few things".

i start off this WIP thread with a list of all the things i have, with two information in brackets to each ship: how i got it (new (meaning from the local GW store), or from ebay) and what its current status is (done, in progress, needs work, or still new in box).

-Apocalypse BB (new, still in box))

crude paintjob, since these were ebay ships with a really crappy and massively thick paintjob on them, couldn't get anything better out of these than that...  (might work over some details again tho if i find the time)  :-\
but looks ok from some distance.

btw, i know the picture quality is not the best, i'm a pretty crappy photographer...  but since my painting skills are not exactly the best either, it doesn't matter too much, i guess  ::)

Neat!

Those blue ebay rescues don't look bad, mate. get some ink washes on them and you'll be in business!

oh heck no, if you look at them closer (in RL), they actually do look pretty bad.

i plan to completely repaint them in the ultima sheme, the "daemon slayer" CA was one of those blue-white ebay ships, and now take a look at it how it looks now  :D

thanks  :)

well, my photo skills do suck pretty bad, so maybe my painting skills can be considered quite ok (if you take into account that i've only been into BFG for slightly more than a year now...   :D )

oh yes, it was a year ago....

and through some devious tricks and a load of sheer luck, i got the entire blue-and-white fleet plus the cardboard ordnance markers from the basic BFG box set for essentially.... free.

yes. i saved 300 euros there.
crappy paintjob or not, IT WAS WORTH IT!!  ;D ;D

Got to love when that happens :D! Im just glad I never got rid of all my markers, wish I had not sold any of my models and rulebooks too but eh i was going through a divorce at the time and they werent a priority.
Title: Re: [BFG] The Survivors

oh, and these transports are painted by me, too. they are not mine, but my buddy who owns them sucks really bad at painting (it's the truth, and his own words, so no, i am not being an ass, he said that himself!  ;D ), so i painted them for him.

these were the first BFG ships i painted and i did it in a hurry as well as not really caring much about accuracy since they're not mine, so these look pretty crappy  ::)

oh well, they usually die within the first two turns, so it doesn't really matter  ;D

(http://imageshack.us/a/img40/5758/p1070864.JPG) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/40/p1070864.JPG/)

three of them are green because my buddy has his fleet in the gothic sector colors, and the single grey one in the back was...  well... a color-test for my own fleet color sheme, so i could see how it looks before i screw up my ships  8)

yeah, i will do that with the metal ships, but i am not aware that you ccould strip the paint off a plastic ship...  is there a method for that?

I've used simple green without issue for years.

Hrmmm good point. Hard to tell what's on the market there still. Now that I think of it Simple green isn't sold there.

Another thing that you should be able to do is use automotive engine degreaser for stripping paint. I've use the casterol super clean product before on plenty plastic chaos cruisers. Just don't leave them for more than a day.
There's probably an equivalent product (or exact product) back in Germany.

well, thanks for the advice, i'll see if i am motivated enough to put that much effort into just three cruisers....   ::)

as you can see with the "daemon slayer", just simply painting over it turns out well enough, i am no pro painter, i am ok with it how it looks  :D

umm, well, i don't think they are good enough to compete with the awesome stuff that comes up there....   :o
especially since i have no chapter symbols on them because i am not good enough at freehanding (they are a  selfmade chapter, so no transfer sheets exist...  :-\ )

If you have an idea in mind for them, someone could probably work it up in photoshop so you could get it printed onto transfer sheets if you have an inkjet printer.

well, i do, and the icon actually rather simple, but i don't know where i can get blank transfer sheets to print on....

i'm also searching for somebody with the gear to make etched brass stuff, this could help me a lot (more for my 40k marines army, but maybe even for BFG if the symbols can be done small enough with brass etching), and i like etched brass things better since working with them is easier than with transfer sheets IMO.

my main problem is time  ::)

currently, i have the choice: complete my marines fleet and enter that one into gothicomp, or finish a large enough part of my imperial navy fleet and submit that to gothicomp...  both are impossible  :(

and i don't know if i even manage one of them....  :-\

i already have two surprises for those two categories as WIP.. hehe.  8)

but you know what? the word "armageddon fleet" gave me an idea...  this year, i'll submit my ultima fleet....  and save the space marines for next year and throw them in with my by then (hopefully) completed armageddon fleet!  :D

well, after some time issues, i could not get anything done really for gothicomp, but then in the end speedpainted these here within less than a single day.

considering the time in which i painted them, i think they turned out not that bad  ;D

(http://img198.imageshack.us/img198/6531/geu1.png) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/198/geu1.png/)

suddenly: PROGRESS.

browsing through the forums, i have read all those threads about people creating new ships, and everyone cheering and being happy that we keep BFG alive, together.

but then, i looked at the other topics in the Modeling and Painting subforum, and realized that it has been a really, really long time since somebody actually has updated any of their project logs. really, there are quite many of them, and when i joined the forums a year ago, there was new stuff every week, always some nice and beautiful ships to look at.

i am guilty myself, been a lon time here. gazing over to my hobby part of the desk, its all filled with 40k armies. frowning, i got up, dug out my box of WIP BFG stuff, grapped the unpainted Retribution battleship, and got on to it.

so, here you go, rough WIP (after somewhat one and a half hours, because of the drying time in between the layers)
(http://i1034.photobucket.com/albums/a426/FistusMaximus/Warhammer%2040k%20WIPs/20140329_230459_zpsxyoew9gv.jpg) (http://s1034.photobucket.com/user/FistusMaximus/media/Warhammer%2040k%20WIPs/20140329_230459_zpsxyoew9gv.jpg.html)
i hope some others might pick up some of their ships again now, come on people, get crackin'  ;)

It is good to see BFG fleets like yours coming along.

I have fleets for Chaos and Necrons, and have been working on building ships for Tyranids. I'm also interested in getting an Eldar fleet (although may get killed for playing both Necrons and Eldar  :P), to match my 40k armies. Unfortunately I have none of my stuff with me anymore to continue building, painting or showing progress.

Have you ever tried playing games on Vassal?
There's a Vassal BFG mod- http://www.mediafire.com/?b6jjyf1ph7sgm (http://www.mediafire.com/?b6jjyf1ph7sgm)
It's extremely clunky, and can't handle many ships (so escort heavy or ordnance heavy don't fair well), but it works well enough. I've been testing out my planned Tyranid ships before I actually build them.
It's also an unpopular mod- you'll have to organise to meet people for games on there, rather than starting games with random strangers like you can in the main Vassal40k room.
