Title: BFG Proxy List
Post by: afterimagedan on April 30, 2013, 07:04:38 PM
Hey guys. The bad news is out but don't forget the good news: there are some awesome ships around that are great and easy to proxy. Let's get a proxy list together with some sweet pictures and recommendations as to what they could be used for!

Tau
The Spartan Games Relthoza look great as Tau ships. I have some and they are quite nice. A little on the large end, but that's how Spartan Games does things.

I'll let you edit your top post, and only provide references. ;)

Brigade Models has decent ships for Imperial Navy, Chaos, and Tyranids.

Shapeways has heresy-era SM Strike Cruisers and various attack craft.

I'm also seeing a lot of potential in the Spartan Dystopian Wars range for Imperial, Chaos and perhaps even Eldar (and Orks of course because Orks can use AAANYTHING).

Not just from the fliers but also the naval ships, of course you'd have to sculpt/convert a lower portion of the hull but that wouldn't be the hardest thing.

At the very least a huge number of very nice looking prows to make use of mixed with engines from other ranges or converted from scratch.

Not too sure how the ship sizes match up though, I know the DW miniatures can be surprisingly large.

Ground Zero Games has some awesome ships. I have two fleets of them and they would work really well for Imperial or Tau fleets.

Federated Stats Europe - Tau
Sa'Vasku - Tyranids
UNSC - Imperial
Scandinavian Federation - Imperial/Chaos

Dan,  when Draxtar gets up and going I'd like to see these ships in person.

Spartan Games do some very nice ships, they are a bit on the large side though, as afterimagedan said.  Actually come to think of it size is something I've never been sure of with some of the Ground Zero Games models, it seems rather hit and miss whether they have a ruler in shot.  If we're trying to assemble a comprehensive list I'd recommend some sort of size indication too.  I've also put some thought into it since yesterday and I think I could have a decent stab at making modular 'not-quite Imperial' ships for casting (though I've never tried casting before, I might get in touch with Trollforged if I can get something to work).

I haven't taken the time yet to take various measurements of the ship classes (mainly length) so I can start making general plans for the adepticon model policy.  Just from memory though I'm thinking that battleships are usually between 3.5 and 4.5 inches long depending on race and ship,   cruisers are generally 2-2.5 inches long and escorts about 1 inch long right?

These have been floating around for a while now:

Battleships. Left to right: Full Thrust (NSL), Firestorm Armada (Sorylians), BFG (Chaos), BFG (Eldar), BFG (Tau - FW)

Cruisers. Left to right: Full Thrust (NSL), Firestorm Armada (Sorylians), BFG (Imperial), BFG (Chaos), BFG (Eldar), BFG (Tau - FW)

Spartan Games Dindrenzi make for perfect AdMech ships.

Cruisers work for cruisers [duh], frigates for light cruisers, with a bit of 40k'ifying ;) Battleship is a bit too big, but I just hacked away middle section and it works way better now.

Some Wip's on my part: - Gothic and Endurance [When I'm done with those I can make some sort of tutorial on cheaply making various weapon sections for them.]

Aquans, on the other hand, are good Eldar when you add 40k Dark Eldar Raider sails. Photos after I'll make some investments ;)

Plus, Spartan Games Britannian ships, while unexpensive, make for great supply of Imperial prows if you're willing to hack them apart. I surely will be.

Spartan has a ton of bits for sale also, FSA is obvious but DW has some cool looking stuff too.

Im planning on doing my Necrons using FSA Relthoza at the moment.

Instead of proxying firestorm armada models

We should build an entire fleet with unique model rules for them
Using BFG rules

Thats a great idea. did you have a 40k race in mind for that or were you thinking of adapting the FSA races to BFG rules? (which really shouldnt be too hard come to think of it).

Between the Marauders and Alliance of Kurak there are a whole host of ships to make a pirate or rogue trader fleet. The Ba'Kash from the Zenian League could be added to that too.

That's perhaps using a few too many ships for a single faction though.
Title: Re: BFG Proxy List
Post by: fracas on May 01, 2013, 03:56:50 PM
The FA fleets come with certain classes
Dreadnought
Battleship
Carrier
2-4 cruises (Mk1, Mk2, Destroyer, and the experimental)
2 escorts

keep the classes, but apply new profiles to match them models (or the fluff)

i wouldn't use them as stand in directly for BFG fleet because going forward, those of us who want 40k ships will already have them in our current collection of BFG models
Title: Re: BFG Proxy List

Well assuming new people pick up the game, more and more people won't already have GW ships hence the point of needing a proxy/conversion parts list.

At least untill we get some nice sculpters to make some non-ip specific space cathedrals and the like.

I'm really hoping that mang takes me up on my offer.  I offered him that I would lease the US rights to his designs off him to sell via Dark Reign, that way, if GW wanted to sue someone, they could sue me. (I wish them luck with that)

So far he's mulling the situation over, but I really think he should strike while the iron is hot.

I was trawling Shapeways and did find some pretty suitable ones:

1. BFG Pre-Heresy Strike Cruiser (http://www.shapeways.com/model/426150/bfg-pre-heresy-strike-cruiser.html)
Probably the nicest, most detailed, most setting-appropriate out there. And probably mentioned before.

2. Clipper Fast Transport (http://www.shapeways.com/model/263390/clipper-class-fast-transport.html)
Has the prow design we all know and love. Though no printed samples. Also, less detail than the first one. The designer also has a couple of other designs of smaller craft with the same aesthetic.

3. Gothic Battleship (http://www.shapeways.com/model/69125/gothic-battleship.html)
This one captures the "Gothic", quite literally. Has a few other similar designs, as well as ground-based stuff too. Designer's page has a LOT of other designs. The prow, perhaps, can be acquired from some other sculptors. (There's one done by a sculptor on Resin Addict called Zeus Prows (http://www.resinaddict.com/blog/2010/02/personal-project-zeus-prows/)) Combined with the aforementioned prow, it'd be quite suitable I think:

those zeus prows would be the best thing ever for me since i am building a small armageddon fleet, but i suck really bad at sculpting and scratchbuilding, hence i still have regular prows on all of my cruisers....  (which looks pretty awful in an armageddon fleet  :-\ )
is there ANY way i could get a hold of these prows?

Was just checking out the GZG store today, after seeing the earlier comparison pics posted by AndrewChristlieb, and after a game played between myself and an opponent using a GZG fleet on Sunday:
http://than-aleaiactaest.blogspot.co.nz/2013/05/battlefleet-gothic-red-versus-blue.html

I think we need to shift the GZG classes down a size to match the BFG scale, and then they work out to be the right scale... so in pic below:
GZG Superdreadnought become BFG Battleship
GZG Battleship becomes Cruiser
GZG Cruiser become BFG Light Cruiser

GZG IF (Islamic Federation) might make ok Necrons?
http://shop.groundzerogames.net/index.php?_a=viewCat&catId=47

Was never that keen on the original Necrons - always thought they didn't put quite enough imagination into the designs or something (e.g. just leaving it as a simple crescent?). These GZG IF ships have the same crescent theme incorporated into their design though and  I think painted up in the right way they would make very good proxies, maybe even slightly more pleasing in some ways. This is seven ships from the range, from escorts to Dreadnought size, though there are more in the range and can't find pics of them all.

(Edit), Last pic is one I found on the web of IF fleet and some guys lunch... ships painted in a black/silver/green theme though which is kind of what I was thinking of.

Got some, the scale is wrong for BFG I think. I.e. you can see cockpits which are means a human would be 3-4mm high. They make great aircraft proxies for Epic though!

Yes, I agree. I have 2 GZG fleets and both is that format. Battleships from GZG will be your cruisers. Dreadnoughts will be your battleships. Some of their escorts are too small so use the slightly larger type escorts. Cruisers from GZG make torp light cruisers.

Post by: Markconz on May 10, 2013, 08:54:21 AM
With the right paint job those GZG Islamic ships might look pretty good, plus there's enough variety to cover the different classes in the BFG-R. The original Necron ships were also pretty rubbish IMO. The Shroud and Tombship in particular, like something some put together from left over bits and a minimum of effort. The Scythe was better.

This is another possibility for Necrons:

They'd be even better with the epic necron obelisks below, though I can't seem to find them available anywhere and scratchbuilding them looks annoying.

These might work for Necron escorts as well, conversion from 40k Necron Lychguards - a Phase Shield and the top of a staff detailed here: http://www.taccmd.tacticalwargames.net/viewtopic.php?f=70&t=23846&hilit=necron

(http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm316/brx-photo/epic40k/IMG_1922.jpg) (http://s299.photobucket.com/user/brx-photo/media/epic40k/IMG_1922.jpg.html)

Nids are obviously doable with repurposed 40k nid models. Dark Eldar from Reavers and Hellions. Orks can be scratchbuilt extensively.

Eldar are probably doable with babylon 5 minbari ships. Albeit they're also an ebay search time

I bought the models I like
Dreadnought for tomb ships
Destroyer for scythes
R&D cruiser for shrouds
Frigates for escorts

The vertical nature of the reltholza gives it s monolithic appearance that reminds me of the monolith.
But I can see why some wants crescents as representative of necrons.

Size comparison pic of the Grim Dark Cruiser next to a SM Strike Cruiser. (I'm lag wagon and finally got around to pulling mine out of storage).

The other picture shows FUD printing detail pretty well. There's some questions people occasionally have popped up about Shapeways Materials. IMO Frosted Ultra Detail or go home.

Would have to agree. Frosted Ultra Detail or go home.

Got a pair of "white" ones and the texture is like a really bad primer job - very grainy all over. I tried a very heavy coat of primer, but it did not help. May try to add Imperial cruiser batteries to the sides, but I suspect that these will probably become Nurgle ships.

Though oddly enough, SWF with the sandpaper texture works better for things like buildings (unless the design is highly detailed) to give some texture to things. :)

Ya Works Raptor are sweet looking. The new Kedorians would make great space stations/ orbital docks/ weapons platforms.

Spartan posted them on Facebook, I think theyre in the gallery now too. Im thinking of getting some though, depends on what the final stat lines look like, I cant say much but I think its safe to say they play like nothing else in FA right now.

Not sure about any orks, most people scratch build them.

Hey all,

We should condens all ideas into a readable proxy list. (Thank you KiC ; ).

So example:
Imperial Navy proxies/alternatives:
aaa manufacturer - models
bbb manufacturer - models

Ork proxies/alternatives:
etc.

Someone willing to set this up?

Humans (Imperial, Chaos, AdMech, Marines): faction line (manufacture)
Eldar (corsair, craftworld, dark): faction line (manufacture)
Orks: faction line (manufacture)
Necron: faction line (manufacture)
Tau: faction line (manufacture)
Tyranids: faction line (manufacture)

@ Fracas, perhaps also most viable options from a line? Like superdreadnought from GZG as Battlebarge specific.

And links is always good to add.

Those Aquan cruisers in the background are pretty close to the same size as an Imp/ Chaos cruiser so the Kedorian BB is probably a bit bigger then a Blackstone.

One of the best Nid proxies available:
http://www.forum.specialist-arms.com/index.php?topic=4591.0

Those are nice, but how on earth are you supposed to know that you can order them from that website? Looked around and can't see an order section??

I second this question. Is there any more info available on this?

Just wanted to give you a heads up on some painted (http://www.forum.specialist-arms.com/index.php?topic=5682.msg55001#msg55001) pics of my Absolutist cruiser. That, and the tons of new stuff on Armand's shop (https://www.shapeways.com/shops/Armand)

Just be aware that Ork Onslaughts are quite a bit smaller then Veydreth Onslaught Gunships ;), its probably best not to assume that the Ork Savage Gunship is close in size to either the Veydredth Onslaught Gunship either or the Veydreth Savage Destroyer...

Ok enough fun, this will be a great source for cruisers, battle cruisers, and battleships but the Veydreth corvettes don't really do anything for me in regards to Orks.

About casting, si far i am jsut thinking about 3D print. And like you said, price can raise quickly...it's why i am thinking i will try to push the model as far as possible in term of detail. I want the ships to worth their price.

That's a license to print money. Time to start experimenting with paints in my airbrush to come up with the correct opalescence for the covenant ;D
I'm expecting some version of FA rules for the game but porting to BFG equivalent rules wouldn't be hard (I'd prefer that as opposed to a counts-as situation)

Yeah. For the game only stem & base matter. The model itself has no value in the game except for visuals.

But  I rather see proxies within the scale of what I already have. :)

That really only leave FSA models and Shapeways then. The reason I was curious is that I was idly considering a Necron fleet using the Cylon ships from Ravenstar.

I like the ships that have been revealed from the Dropfleet game so far. I can't wait to see what the other fleets look like. I'm curious what scale the ships are in though. Mainly curious if it will be similar to BFG in size.

Those drop ship turrets seem I practically and disproportionately large
Title: Re: BFG Proxy List
Post by: Seahawk on April 29, 2015, 02:08:15 AM
Depends on the scale. I mean, the models themselves are comparable to BFG size, but the scale of the ship seems to be a lot smaller, like I'd maybe rate the battleship as being maybe Star Wars scale or less (e.g. .6-1.2km for ship length). That'd make the turrets more reasonable, especially if they were a sort of linear acceleration guns, which they appear to be. If nothing else, you can always cut them short!

I picked up a few of the AdMech-looking (“Venusian”) escort-sized ships from Abomination.
http://www.freewebstore.org/Abomination/Spacecraft/cat1322682_1476069.aspx

The transport and oiler are very crisply cast.  They’re really, really good.

The gunships I received are a little rougher; the mold has probably been used a lot more.  The front face of the prow, under the lance, appears to have lost a lot of its intended detail.  Elsewhere, the detail is a little soft compared to the other two ships.  Not bad – there are GW and FW ships that are worse.  I’d be very happy with them if the other two ships weren’t so nice!

I think I'll use the transports as WB-armed escorts despite the lack of obvious weaponry.

A long time ago Ben designed a bunch of ships, which he released through Abomination Miniatures. Sadly enough Abomination is no longer around, but its ships line (http://vanguardminiatures.co.uk/product-category/gothic-starships/) has been taken over by Vanguard Miniatures. Now he started working on a cruiser hull, but we still need feedback. So what do you guys think of this ship?

I like the current Vanguard ship line and intended to pick some up. I definitely welcome some cruiser hulls appearing. Are they perchance redoing the counts as lance armed escort too? That would be really good.

The cruiser looks promising - are those interchangeable weapon options? Definitely a good idea. The hull itself though seems a bit underwhelming. The engine and bridge area could benefit from being bulked out more - it's a cruiser after all. Perhaps a larger bridge and some fins at the ends of the wings? And perhaps a fin? This would help make the cruiser look more like a CAPITAL ship than an elongated escort.

ALSO - I would love to see more than one cruiser type, even if it's just a biggerised Venusian support ship with a few more turrets.

Hope that feedback helps - knowing me I'll probably grab some anyway ;)

The venusian is a perfect AdMech stand in. The bridge is perfect that way. In my opinion the prow needs some stream lining.

I'm such a muppet. When I suggested 'fins and perhaps a fin' I meant a ventral fin, like the old GW Imperials had. Ho hum, sorry!

Happy belated birthday to Vanguard! I'll go back to my cave now :)

Yes, i know forgeworld-ordnance comes with these bases. But thats "because forgeworld", not because you can use them in the game...

I'd recommend Gale Force 9 magnetic 20mm square bases for ordnance. Storage becomes easy, just put all your ordnance into a lunchbox and it wont break on you.

How official is this? I haven't been able to find that rule in the official rulebook. Source and page number please. :)

Quote from: BFG 2010 FAQ, Page 8, Attack Craft Heading, 1st paragraph:
Attack craft are represented by 20mm square markers. When used in a wave, they must be spread and moved so they are always in contact with each other, and they cannot be stacked.

Bold mine.

Of course, if you don't use the 2010 update there is no "official" ruling on attack craft base size.  If a player had old ordnance on the 1x5cm Epic bases, I'd let them use them as long as they tried their best to keep the waves as close to "circular" as possible, so that there's no a long, thin line of bombers stretching from one target to the next.

A multi part full resin cast model of the Novan Fast Cruiser.

Please note that this model has minor fit issues with the wings which is why i’m selling them cheaper than would normally be the case. Customers have requested release of this model regardless of this problem so I have done so. If you look at the gallery images of the ship you can see what the problem is and make up your own mind if you want to purchase or not, really you just need to trim/file the wings to sit better in the recesses and tidy up with green stuff if you wish.

Approximate model dimensions, Length: 85mm Wingspan: 41mm

7mm dice for scale

It's so sleek and stylish! Reminds me of the classic Space Fleet designs, only transported to this modern age of miniatures brilliance.

As I was browsing the thread to get to the end, I had another look at that Hawk Wargames space station set: I'd forgotten how amazing it is!

Guys, a quick question: we've had a teeny tiny version of the new Elites Eagle gunship done for starship scale gaming but is it too small next to the fighters. Should we upscale it a bit?
